In the world of impact entrepreneurship, there’s an unrelenting pressure to maintain an optimistic outlook, regardless of the challenges faced. We’ve become masters at reframing setbacks as “learning opportunities” and putting a positive spin on crises. But while positivity can be powerful, toxic positivity is dangerous. When we gloss over the gravity of a situation, we lose the ability to take timely, effective action.

There’s a pervasive mindset in the social good sector that forces us to project hope at all costs, but this mentality can be more of a hindrance than a help. When we fail to call a crisis by its name, we strip ourselves of the clarity needed to make hard, necessary decisions. We end up trapped in performative optimism, convincing ourselves—and others—that things aren’t as bad as they seem. Meanwhile, the crisis worsens.

By avoiding the label of “crisis,” we also avoid the responsibility to act decisively. It’s tempting to soothe our anxieties with the narrative of incremental progress, but this only delays the moment of truth. Acknowledging reality is not pessimism; it’s a radical act of leadership. Impact entrepreneurs and non-profit leaders must recognise when their ventures, models, or missions are in crisis—and that’s not a failure. It’s an invitation to act with urgency.

Disrupting the business-as-usual mindset requires courage. It means being willing to say, “This isn’t working,” and asking the tough questions: What do we need to stop doing? What do we need to let go of? By confronting crisis, we can pivot with purpose, charting a course that’s grounded in reality—not wishful thinking.

True leadership lies in the ability to face hard truths, not in perpetuating illusions.
