Systems research involves a combination of desk and direct research with ecosystem stakeholders - a process that is outsourced to a dedicated stakeholder research team. Note that research of this nature must incorporate some form of compensation for interviewees in order to eliminate the potential for extractive behaviours.

Systems mapping involves a combination of desk research, field work, and ethnographic interviews in order to ensure that the entirety of the system is effectively understood. By identifying primary stakeholder groups, and better understanding their needs, it's possible to determine how well the system has been designed for their purposes. The typical outputs of a systems mapping exercise are a visual representation of the system(s) under investigation, including call outs to areas that are sub-optimal, and early-stage recommendations for improvements.

Most systems are comprised of frameworks that help us to better understand them. Social systems, for instance, have been consistently defined according to the needs of the individual, the family, the community, and society at large. Complex systems are comprised of many such frameworks, many of which have never been intentionally designed to work together.
